What The British Franchise Association says...
"In relation to any other small business, franchising has proved to be successful, with 96% of units still operating profitable businesses 5 years down the line. Only 66% of small firms survive the first 3 years (Small Business Service 2005). There is [some evidence to suggest that franchises are less likely to fail than other types of small business organisations (Castrogiovanni Justis and Julian 1993). But remember that franchising is not an easy option and will require investment of a lot of hard work and money, particularly in the early stages." (Source: BFA Website)

"Banking, and in particular franchising, has come a long way in the last 25 years and we are thrilled that we have been able to commit to helping so many franchisors and franchisees succeed." - (source Natwest Website)

What HSBC says...
"Franchising has grown steadily in the UK over the last 30 years. It is a well-established and successful method of doing business. It is prevalent in most business sectors, particularly the fast food and service industries.
Franchising is a 'joint venture' between an independent third party (the franchisee) and a business (the franchisor) wishing to expand its activities. The venture is governed by a contract which gives the franchisee the right to operate using the franchisor's trade name/trade mark, in accordance with a business format or 'blueprint'. All aspects of the franchisee's business are strictly controlled including image, products or service, systems and administration."
This method is usually known as 'business format franchising' - source: HSBC website)
